Hey Paul, just came across this in Notes, saw the hero image with eyes (that made me click) and then laughed out loud as I read your charming story—very well written too. I've been writing for two years and often take my ideas (and myself) a bit too seriously. But then I come across pieces like yours and it reminds me of all the things I can choose to write about, and all the ways I can make writing fun. So thank you. I'm subscribing for sure.
This reminds me of a story when I was around the same age.
The kids in my neighborhood had built a "club" in the woods nearby. To enter the club, you had to spell the words "I" and "a". I had not learned to spell any words besides my name, so I was denied. I remember the gatekeeper's smirk. We began learning to spell basic words in kindergarten a few weeks later I believe, and I realized I had been duped.
Thought I'd share that when I was born my eyes were paralyzed - I couldn't roll or move them. I had surgery on the muscles in my eyes around my 3rd birthday and I've been able to move them ever since. Your article made me think how tough it'd be to NOT be able to move my eyes as an adult, with driving, reading, typing, etc.

Love this! I’m so glad for the relaunch!
These first two IC posts have made me realize how glad I am that you're back.
This story makes me want to roll my eyes - but in a good way! Welcome back, Paul!
So happy you and your interesting take on life is back, Paul! Don’t forget to keep us up to date on Biscuit and Waffles!

There is SO MUCH charm in this little vignette...makes me really look forward to everything else you have planned for the Substack!
It’s great to have you back Paul. I so need this kind of mental floss.
