You being on a show aimed at truckers makes a lot of sense to me. I’ve found long haulers to be thoughtful, attentive people with an interest in … interesting things.
One of my best hitchhiking stories involves a West Virginia based trucker picking my up outside Allentown PA, taking me to his favorite diner in central PA and then taking me to Roadside America (https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2208) because he’d always wanted to go but didn’t want to go solo, before dropping me in Columbus.
The stereotype has good foundations, but the gems are truly gems.
I first discovered Tony Millionaire through his association with They Might Be Giants.
One of my favorite pieces of trivia used to be that Tony Millionaire was Andy Richter's brother-in-law, but then Andy got divorced, so it's not valid anymore.
By weird coincidence, Andy Richter was a big fan of my 1990s zine, 'Beer Frame: The Journal of Inconspicuous Consumption," which is how I ended up appearing on Conan O'Brian during that period. I didn't know of his in-law connection to Tony!
You were on Conan?! That's awesome! Fun random fact is that Conan "performed" at the Newport Folk Fest last month, telling stories and inviting various guests aka friends, on stage to perform mostly acoustic covers. But Conan O'Brian at the Newport Folk Fest was definitely NOT on my 2024 bingo card 😁
I love the story of the 14-year gap between the interview and the completion of the film. Makes me think of all of the partially completed projects out there.
Having known a trucker or two I think your content is going to speak to many of them in a way they’ll enjoy. They’ll point out what’s changed along one of their routes constantly and, the ones I know, will zero in on details. Fonts changed on signs, distances recalibrated to familiar roadside attractions, the fixin’s bar at Roy Rogers in New Jersey has a different brand of ketchup (catsup?!?). You’re in for a treat on that call.
If you want to binge a podcast abut trucking before the show, I can't recommend Over the Road enough! https://www.overtheroad.fm/ I stumbled upon it way back and gave it a whirl and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've tried to "upgrade to paid" 4 or 5 times and they keep telling me to disable my ad blocker. I've disabled all privacy settings and it's still not working. Oh well, maybe next year

Oh, man -- I miss Roadside America so much. R.I.P.

Wait wait wait… I need to now go feverishly seek out and find your Conan appearance. Had no clue.

Oh man, Maakies was the best! Although I am no longer drinkie myself, I still have my Drinkie Crow shot glasses!
Dook dook dook!
Success on the phone!

Hmmm. Try doing it on your phone and see if that works. If it doesn't, please email me (plukas64@gmail.com) and I'll set up a workaround for you.
I like that you’re wearing the I’m calling it Shea shirt in the interview
That shirt came out in 2009, and I did the interview in the spring of 2010.
Too bad this won't be available to listen to outside of XM. I do look forward to hearing about the highlights from the interview.
