Uni Watch Power Rankings for the NFL’s New Throwback and Alternate Uniforms

Assessing all the new logos, from worst to first.

This has turned out to be a super-busy summer for NFL uniforms, as a whopping 10 teams have unveiled new throwback or alternate designs over the past six weeks. With the deluge of new releases now complete (at least as far as I know!), it’s time to separate the contenders from the pretenders and see how the new designs stack up.

The key ground rule here is that these rankings are only for the new 2023 throwback and alternate releases. So, for example:

• Previously existing throwbacks, like Miami’s, Atlanta’s, and Pittsburgh’s (among many others), are not included in these rankings.

• Previously existing alternates, like Carolina’s and Cincinnati’s, are likewise not included.

• I also decided not to include the Cardinals’ new uniforms. Their new set includes an alternate, but it was part of a larger, team-wide overhaul, so that feels like a separate category. (If I had included it, it would have placed very low on the list.)

With those guidelines in mind, here are one observer’s rankings of the new NFL throwback and alternate designs, from worst to first.

10. Indianapolis Colts (new alternate uniform)

The great thing about the lifting of the one-shell rule is that it lets us see sorely missed throwbacks and gives teams flexibility to create interesting alternate designs. The “Be careful what you wish for” thing about it is that it also allows for nonsense like this awful Colts alternate. Blue over blue with an embarrassingly lame-o black helmet? Woof! Destined to land on lots of “What were they thinking?” lists. Cream of the crap.
