Uni Watch Blog Digest for the Week Ending July 28, 2023
One-stop shopping for the past week of Uni Watch Blog content.
Before we get started, a quick programming note: I always take a break from the daily Uni Watch Blog in August. The daily blog will keep operating next month, under the direction of deputy editor Phil Hecken, but I will not be producing these weekly digests on Fridays in August. So you should definitely visit the blog regularly next month!
I will keep doing my weekly feature-length articles here on Substack in August — the deep dives, the interviews, and so on. So if you’re a paid subscriber, you’ll keep getting those. And the Friday digests will resume in September.
Okay, here’s what went down this past week:

A late-breaking item from last Friday that didn’t make it into last week’s digest: Ohio State football has unveiled a new grey alternate uniform.

The Denver Broncos unveiled their new white alternate helmet.
Despite all the alternate designs currently floating around the NFL uni-verse, there are no plans for alternate uniforms in Kansas City.
Over in the NBA (remember them?), the Pelicans unveiled their new Statement alternate.
The Green Bay Packers have acquired the mom-and-pop company that manufactures Cheesehead hats.
Wednesday, July 26
The first and last pitches of Tuesday night’s Yankees/Mets game were both thrown by pitchers wearing No. 0. Had that ever happened before? I had fun investigating the answer to that question.
The NHL’s Florida Panthers unveiled a 30th-anniversary logo.
I took a close Uni Watch look at the movie Oppenheimer, which is filled with interesting uni-related details — and at least one major production-design goof.
The Miami Dolphins have announced two throwback games for 2023: one in white and one in aqua.
Thursday, July 27
Cap’n Crunch has gotten an important uniform update — as well as a disturbing anatomical adjustment.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred got a contract extension, which is bad news for uniforms.
The Titans announced the dates for their Oilers throwback games.
The Eagles announced the unveiling date for their Kelly green throwbacks.
Friday, July 28
After having the NFL logo at midfield at their shared stadium, the Jets and Giants will have their own midfield logos this year (including three separate designs for the Jets!).
Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón covered up the sleeve ad on his jersey — until he was apparently told to stop.
The Eagles’ Kelly green jersey, which will be unveiled on Monday, appears to have leaked.
The Lakers will retire at least one uni number — and maybe two — for LeBron James.
A Broncos team executive confirmed that the team is “definitely working on” new uniforms.
Uni Watch News Ticker
In addition to the articles I just linked to, we also had the Uni Watch News Ticker — our daily roundup of news items from across the uni-verse. Here are the Tickers for Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Since the Broncos showed their new alternate helmet this week, any chance for a deep dive on the Broncos helmets (and maybe uniform history pre-1997)?
