I collect Montreal Canadiens game-used memorabilia, including jerseys, helmets, gloves, sticks, and pucks — a lot of pucks. About 170 of them, almost all of which are goal pucks, meaning they were used to score a goal and then taken out of circulation so they could be auctioned off to collectors like me.
One of those pucks is more special than all the others. It’s from a goal scored by Montreal left wing Michael Pezzetta on March 12th, 2022, when the Canadiens hosted the Seattle Kraken. Here’s the goal:
My first child, Esther, was born the day before that game (the Habs didn’t play on March 11th), and Pezzetta’s goal was the team’s first score of the night, so it was the Canadiens’ first goal in Esther’s lifetime. As a collector, I decided this would be the best possible puck to own as a tribute to my daughter’s birth, and I was lucky enough to win it when the team put it up for auction.
