Hello! It’s time for another round of “Ask Me Anything,” where Uni Watch readers submit questions and I do my best to respond to them.
If you want to catch up on previous AMA installments, look here, here, here, here, and here. There are 11 additional editions, dating back several years (when I was calling it “Question Time” instead of AMA), here.
Without further ado, here we go:
MLB pants, socks, and stirrups are all over the place! No consistency, no uniformity. Why can’t there be a rule requiring everyone to look the same?
Like you, I would love to see that. But any such rule would have to be approved by the players’ union, which would never agree to it. Moreover, most managers and even owners these days just want their players to be comfortable, and most of today’s players are more comfortable with the pajama-pants look. I’m not happy about it, but that’s just how things are — and how they’re likely to remain for the foreseeable future.
Not that I’m a fan of it, but with a lot of NFL teams going with same-colored pants and socks, which basically creates a solid-colored long-pants look, do you think the NFL will ever go with just long pants?
The NFL actually tried this in the 2011 Pro Bowl, where players had the option of wearing long (or at least long-ish) pants. It was not a hit with either the players or the fans.
In any case, here’s the thing: While baseball players have been wanting to wear their pants longer, NFL players keep wanting to wear their pants shorter. We’ve all seen guys with the “biker shorts” look, as players try to increase their range of movement and lighten their load. So aside from any aesthetic considerations about the pant/sock intersection, I think long football pants are unlikely because it wouldn’t jibe with what today’s players actually want to wear from a functional perspective.
Which NFL facemask colors would you change?
Fun question! I’d start with these:
